Frequently Asked Questions
What are lifestyle portraits?
Our studio is renowned for shooting natural images that provide unique insights into our clients’ lifestyles, personalities and relationships. Our images are not passive ‘smile at the camera’ shots. We create elegantly, finished wall art, rather like a French Art Poster with you and your family as the subject models.
We create timeless portraits that you will continue to love in years to come, and never regret. We photograph families, couples, siblings, singles, grandparents, retirees, teens, tweens, toddlers and pets. So whatever form your family takes, Lifestyle Portraits can help you celebrate these special bonds.
What is so unique about Lifestyle Portraits?
We transform Ordinary People into Extraordinary Art. Award winning photographer, Darren Tilnak has over 30 years of experience, specialsing exclusively in black and white, so you are in great hands. We shoot candid images in natural light, capturing emotion in motion. Lifestyle Portraits produce exclusively black and white images, which makes everyone look amazing, and gives you an image that is truly timeless.
What days do you shoot on location?
Our shooting schedule is every Saturday, and two Sunday mornings a month from 8am to midday. Generally we allow an hour to shoot three scenes. We meet you on location and you can bring along any props you would like included. Shoots are by appointment only. Please note, we can organise mid-week shoots by special arrangement.
Do you photograph large families of 10 to 20?
We encourage you to include all family members, and we especially advise you to capture grandparents, as these images are forever valued by families later. On one day we can do the whole family then break the shoot down into separate shots.
For example, if there are approximately 13 family members, , we suggest photographing the extended family all together. Afterwards, we can photograph grandparents on their own, then with the grand children, and if requested each family member individually. We know organising everyone to be there at the same time is tricky, but if you do, we guarantee you will have an archive of your family preserved in a way unlike any other. When shooting large family shots, we suggested that a minimum of a 24-inch print is required for your wall.
Do you do weddings?
Our speciality is family portraiture, therefore, unfortunately, we do not photograph weddings. Rather we start with photographing you as a couple, either prior to or after the wedding, followed by during pregnancy, then with your children and their grandparents and so on. Many clients enjoy Lifestyle Portraits shoots at regular intervals during their lives to create beautiful wall-art stories that chronicle the growth of their families.
Do you come to our home and photograph?
What makes our imagery so unique is that it we conduct all of our shoots on location, using settings that offer depth and architectural interest. If, for some reason, this is not possible, we can make special arrangements.
Do you associate yourselves with charities and schools?
We sponsor over 100 Victorian and interstate charities throughout the year, some of which include: The BMDI Fight Cancer Foundation’s Red Ball, Ronald McDonald House, The Shane Warne Foundation, and many school charities. If you wish for us to donate a gift package to your favourite charity, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Where is your studio?
Our studio is situated in a beautiful 1860's Bluestone heritage-listed building, Nettleton House, located at 663 Victoria Street, Abbotsford (opposite IKEA). Simply park at Victoria Gardens and walk across the road.
How soon can we see our images?
You can generally view your images within five days. We have day and evening viewing appointments available during the week and Saturday afternoons. The viewing process takes approximately an hour. We do request that both ‘heads of the house’ come to the appointment and where possible, leave young children at home. We ask that you take some shots of your wall space and bring them along, which will make it easier to design a gallery installation to suit your home.
What if we don’t like any of the images?
We guarantee the result. This is our motto: if you don’t absolutely LOVE the result, then you are under no obligation to invest.
Can you Photoshop me?
Yes, we are experts! Our production team can change any part of the image you don’t like: consider it a trip to the cosmetic surgeon, except without pain. So fear not the lens – our enhanced images are made to order, by you!
Do you charge a shoot fee?
Our studio charges a one-off, lifetime membership shoot fee of $250.00. This covers the initial design consultation, location shoot, viewing and production time. However, once we have photographed you, you are then a customer for life and this membership covers all future shoot costs. If you have a Rewards Card, then this membership is already covered.
Do you have lay-by?
We certainly do! For your convenience, we offer lay-by terms for up to 24 months. Your images will be dated the year they were shot. -
Are the images framed?
Our prices include the images fully enhanced, mounted and matted ready for framing. Because there are 50+ quality frame mouldings to choose from at all different pricing and range, it would be difficult to include framing in the image price. However most of our clients will have their images framed with us because we are charging wholesale pricing. We will discuss this with you at the time of your viewing. -
Can we include our pets?
Pets are part of the family, so where possible or desired, are welcome to be included in the shoot. We have photographed hundreds of dogs over the years, and many other pets, including rabbits, cats, horses, turtles and even a snake! Pets are part of your lifestyle, and that’s what we capture.
What do we wear?
As our images are timeless, we like to capture you in casual attire. For example, denims are great as they have been around for a 100 years and will be for another 100 years. We insist that you do not wear whites, stripes or logos. Even in hot summer months we like you to dress in a winter outfit, as this provides more of a timeless look.
We ensure that you are well prepared and we take you through all the dress guidelines during the consultation before every shoot. Depending on the type of shoot we design together, there might even be wardrobe changes on set.
My children don’t like to be photographed, how I can excite them?
We have shot over 5,000 children, so you can leave it up to our professional photographers and assistants. If you have teenagers and young adult kids that don’t want to come along, get them to look at the galleries on this website. The galleries show that what we do is very different to the average family shoot. After the shoot they often say: ‘that was really cool!’
With young children, we will capture them doing what they love, for example, skateboarding, playing music, reading magazines, action sports, shopping and so on. They too will love the experience and the imagery. Plus, for all printed images you buy, we also give you the soft copy. That means you and your kids can enjoy adding the shots to their social media pages!
